MECDAS/spl minus/a distributed data acquisition system for experiments at MAMI

For coincidence experiments with the three-spectrometer setup at MAMI an experiment control and data acquisition system has been built and was put successfully into final operation in 1992. MECDAS is designed as a distributed system using communication via Ethernet and optical links. At the front end, VMEbus systems are used for real time purposes and direct hardware access via CAMAC, Fastbus or VMEbus. RISC workstations running UNIX are used for monitoring, data archiving and online and offline analysis of the experiment. Metamodeling editor as a front end tool for a CASE shell

Customizable Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools, often called CASE shells, are penetrating in the market. CASE shells provide a flexible environment to support a variety of information systems development methods. CASE shells are often cumbersome to use and in practice few people can model and implement methods in them. To overcome these problems we have developed a graphical metamodeling environment called MetaEdit and a method modeling interface to the CASE shell RAMATIC. Using this interface the methodology engineer can develop graphical models in RAMATIC's model definition language and then easily generate the resource files that control the operations of RAMATIC. iTeXMac: An Integrated TeX Environment for Mac OS X

iTeXMac is an integrated suite of three major components: a text editor detailed in section 2, a PDF viewer detailed in section 3, and a TeX front end detailed in section 4. Some notes on installation are followed by remarks concerning inter-application communication in section 6 for other Mac OS X developers. Finally, the pdfsync feature and the TeX Wrapper are discussed in sections 7 and 8. Since they concern the synchronization between the TeX source and PDF output, and a definition for a shared TeX document structure, both will certainly interest the whole TeX community.

Advanced time-stamped total data acquisition control front-end for MeV ion beam microscopy and proton beam writing

Many ion-matter interactions exhibit [email protected] time dependences such as, fluorophore emission quenching and ion beam induced charge (IBIC). Conventional event-mode MeV ion microbeam data acquisition systems discard the time information. Here we describe a fast time-stamping data acquisition front-end based on the concurrent processing capabilities of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The system is intended for MeV ion microscopy and MeV ion beam lithography. The speed of the system (>240,000 events s^-^1 for four analogue to digital converters (ADC)) is limited by the ADC throughput and data handling speed of the host computer.

Development of the Optical Multiplexer Board Prototype for Data Acquisition in the TileCal System

This paper describes the development of the optical multiplexer board (OMB), also known as PreROD board, for the TileCal readout system in the ATLAS experiment. The aim of this board is to overcome the problems that may arise in the integrity of data due to radiation effects. The solution adopted has been to add redundancy to data transmission and so two optical fibers with the same data come out from the detector front end boards. Upgrade and yields of the IGISOL facility

The front end of the Jyvaskyla IGISOL facility was upgraded in 2003 by increasing its pumping capacity and by improving the radiation shielding. In late 2005, the skimmer electrode of the mass separator was replaced by a sextupole ion guide, which improved the mass separator efficiency up to an order of magnitude. The current design of the facility is described. The updated yield data, achieved with and without the additional JYFLTRAP purification, using both fusion evaporation reactions and particle induced fission is presented to give an overview of the capability of the facility. Asynchronous Occlusion Culling on Heterogeneous PC Clusters for Distributed 3D Scenes

We present a parallel rendering system for heterogeneous PC clusters to visualize massive models. One single, powerful visualization node is supported by a group of backend nodes with weak graphics performance. While the visualization node renders the visible objects, the backend nodes asynchronously perform visibility tests and supply the front end with visible scene objects. The visualization node stores only currently visible objects in its memory, while the scene is distributed among the backend nodes’ memory without redundancy. PESIC: An Integrated Front-End for PET Applications

An ASIC front-end has been developed for multi-anode photomultiplier based nuclear imaging devices. Its architecture has been designed to improve resolution and decrease pile-up probability in Positron Emission Tomography systems which employ continuous scintillator crystals. Analog computation elements are isolated from the photomultiplier by means of a current sensitive preamplifier stage. This allows digitally programmable adjustment of every anode gain, also providing better resolution in gamma event position calculation and a shorter front-end deadtime. Position sensitive scintillator based detector improvements by means of an integrated front-end

PESIC is an integrated front-end for multianode photomultiplier based nuclear imaging devices. Its architecture has been designed to improve position sensitive detectors behavior by equalizing its response over its whole area. Its preamplying stage introduces two main benefits: digitally programmable gain adjustment for every photomultiplier output, and isolation from other front-end electronics by means of current buffers. The measurements performed include those of studying the effective number of bits, the energy resolution using HP-Ge detectors, as well as timing histograms and discrimination performance.
